George Bellows
George Bellows - An American Realist Painter
The full name of George Bellows is George Wesley Bellows, who was a popular American painter and lithographer. He was popularly known for his paintings of action scenes and his expressive portraits and seascapes. George was a realist painter who created bold depictions of urban life in New York City. He also actively took part in the movement of Ashcan school, the Eight, and American realism.
The early life of George Wesley Bellows:
George Wesley Bellows was a famous painter who was born on August 12, 1882, and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He began painting at a very early age, and he was also asked to decorate his classroom blackboards at Thanksgiving and Christmas in his elementary school. George was also trained to be a baseball and basketball player at the age of ten. He played for the baseball and basketball teams at the Ohio State University. In addition to that, he also worked as a commercial illustrator and continued to accept magazine assignments all his life.
George Wesley Bellows got a great opportunity in athletics, but he desired to become a painter. So, he left Ohio State in 1904 and moved to New York City to study art. He became associated with Henri’s The Eight and the Ashcan School, a group of artists who were more into painting contemporary American society. In 1947, Bellows with his fellow art students Edward Keefe had set up a studio.
